Please note!
Most of our CDs have been imported from Europe or Asia. They are not all shrink-wrapped, and I am not going to con you by wrapping them here just to make you think they have been sterilized in America. I guarantee that the CDs and the contents are all brand new and in perfect condition. Whenever I can, I use recycled shipping materials. They may not look as pretty on the outside, but they save money and keep the trash dumps a little bit emptier.
Thanks- Cliff, cdRoots

Elisa Vellia - Ahnaria - $coming soon
(cdRoots# hm-cdm2741580)
Greek singer-songwriter Elisa Vellia Vellia left Athens for London at the age of 21, where she discovered the singular beauty of the Celtic harp. She devoted herself to mastering this instrument, working with some of the major figures in the world of the Irish and Scottish harp. This musical passion eventually led her to Brittany, where she found the ideal place for her own music: that of a cultural identity without borders. Her unique voice and playing evoke the entire range of cultures clustered around the fascinating and mysterious sea that is the Mediterranean. The booklet includes complete song texts and English translations.

Beata Soderberg and JusTango - Bailata - $coming soon
(cdRoots# hm-wv498022)
As a student in NY, Swedish-born cellist Beata Söderberg discovered the world of Argentinean tango. Walking into a New York milonga one day, she was taken by the intensity, energy and passion of the dance and began to compose original tangos. Her writing gives a fresh twist to the sound of the classic quintet (violin, piano, bandonéon, bass and drums) by making the cello its lead voice. Her ensemble, JusTango, consists of Cristian Zárate (piano and director), Horacio Romo (bandonéon), Roberto Tormo (double bass), José Luis Colzani (percussion), with guest César Angeleri (guitar).

Rene Mailhes Trio - Chtildo - $coming soon
(cdRoots# hm-i3001985)
René Mailhes first came to public notice in the 1950s. Breaking free of the long shadow of Django Reinhardt, he forged his own style, inspired by the work of American players like Barney Kessel, Jim Hall and Kenny Burell, and the bebop innovators Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. With sensitivity and lyricism, Mailhes gives musical expression to the diversity and depth of his emotions. On this intimate album, the melodic beauty of his solos, with their subtle harmonic development, poignant inflections and, above all, their sensitivity and emotion, form a passionate declaration of his love for music. His line-up includes Patrice Galas (piano) and Dominique Lemerle (bass), with guest vocalist Gilda Solve.

Mounira Mitchala - Talou Lena - $coming soon
(cdRoots# hm-mar46826)
Singer and songwriter Mounira Mitchala could be one of Africa's rising stars. The themes that inspire her songs concern such weighty matters as forced marriages, the expansion of the desert, peace and reconciliation between Chadians, discrimination against AIDS sufferers and war in general. Drawing on traditional rhythms and music of Chad, to which she has added modern instruments and arrangements, Mitchala is creating her own unique style.

Bantu, Docta, Sister Fa andmore - Many Lessons - $coming soon
(cdRoots# hm-pir2112)
In Western Africa, it seems hip-hop and Islam might not be so at odds with one another as one might suspect. In the last few years, as the rap movement swept through Africa, young rappers learned how to make Islam an integral part of their music, particularly in countries like Mali or Senegal that are heavily influenced by Muslim beliefs. Some artists combine devoutness with social criticism. Others criticize using religion to achieve political aims. The lessons are many and varied. 'Where in this world do Islam, American pop culture, youth culture and emancipation cross with the heritage of a culture conscious of its traditions? And what comes out of that? The answer is as simple as it is unlikely and is unfolding in these 14 stirring lessons,' says Tobias Maier Of Radio Multikulti of this 2008 release.

Sally Nyolo - Mémoire du Monde - $coming soon-temp out of stock14.99
(cdRoots# sky-038)
An electro-acoustic album that uses the 6/8 of Bikusti rhythm of Cameroun along with more modern inspiration. Recorded in Cameroon with local musicians, and then in Paris with her own band, the music swings from one language to another (Eton and French), inventing a new way of singing the songs. There is pure Bikutsi in this album, but also blues and reggae. The album is entirely written, produced and realized by Nyolo, with assitance on a few tracks from Michel Aimé, Marc Etienne and Sylvain Marc. Former Zap Mama sister Sylvie Nawasadio, and Bokué Pygmy singers from Cameroun also participate.

Bunky and Jake - L.A.M.F. - $coming soon - temp out of stock
(cdRoots# pbj-1)
The legendary underground pop recording from 1969, by an artist I was always fascinated with and had the good fortune to meet in my early days in the New Haven-to-New York music scene in the 70s, L.A.M.F.. It's sweet, it's funky, it's bunky and cool. A personal favorite for those who remember the time as clever, innovative, funny and sweet, like I do. The sessions were recorded with some of the greats in the NY studio scene, including Felix Pappalardi, Buzzy Linhart, Ray Barretto, Ernie Hayes and Chuck Rainey. But of course, it was all about Jake's great songs and Bunky wonderful voice, and it still is.
